NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH CIRCULAR NOVEMBER 5th 2007

Around 14 thefts or attempted thefts have been reported in Rutland since 16th October. These were generally distraction burglaries or attempts to enter properties via insecure doors and windows. In two incidents a silver BMW was seen outside the premises. Cars have been broken into and valuables taken. Some vehicles were insecure.

Please be vigilant-especially during the day when many of these crimes have been occurring. Remember to check all doors and windows before turning in for the night, not forgetting outbuildings.

Be very cautious of cold calls. One Lyddington resident had a call from St. John’s Crime Prevention Association and when told we had a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme the ‘young gentleman’ ended the conversation. I have checked with the Police who said that if no details of the resident were requested there is probably no cause for concern. However, I have registered the incident. If you have such a call or any situation that worries you, do ring the 101 number immediately. All these calls are registered enabling the police to see patterns arising and react more promptly.

Be aware of bogus callers. If you are suspicious do not let them in, however urgent their requests. Ask for identification. Do not be distracted. If the suspect caller says he is from one of the services, close the door and check that their representative is in your area. This may sound like commonsense, but we can all be hoodwinked sometimes.

A variety of valuable garden ornaments and furniture have been stolen. Be aware. Anchor if possible.

Try to make your house look occupied at all times.

Now that darker evenings are here wear something white or reflective when out walking.
